Ring Jewel Bearing
Ring Jewel Bearing is a miniature type of ring or journal bearings. Typical materials are synthetic sapphire and ruby with a friction of 0.15 or less (sliding friction with steel). Ring jewels are served as a journal or annular bearings normally used with straight cylindrical shafts. Ring jewels contain a contoured hole shaped like an hourglass or an olive. The olive hole offers a reduced contact area with pivots that lead to lower friction and permit assembly adjustment so as to compensate for any misalignment.

As radial/sleeve gemstone bearings, Ring Jewel Bearing is used with straight cylindrical shafts. The Bearing on the ring has many combinations with gemstones, so they are flexible. Straight holes limit lateral movement, but precise alignment is required when the gap between the pivot and the gem bearing is tight. The olive hole provides low friction with the pivot and allows assembly adjustment. It provides minimal contact with the pivot to achieve light, intermittent end thrust. In the case of continuous thrust load, the end stone is usually combined with the ring gem.
